About St. Louis
Before it was known as St. Louis, the area was home to several Native American tribes before Pierre Laclede Liguest received a land grant from the King of France. Laclede and his scout chose this location as a fur trade post since it was near the confluence of the Mississippi and Mississippi Rivers while remaining out of flood zone hazards. As the village was being built, it was named after Louis IX of France, passing between French and Spanish control before transferring to United States territory in 1803.
It was at this point in time when the Louisiana Purchase began – when Lewis and Clark began their expedition, and St. Louis was incorporated as a city in 1823. Now, the city is the largest and most populous metropolitan area in Missouri. It’s also the second largest inland port in the country, remaining ice-free all year for major cargo shipments.
